English Landscape Designer Constructs Mushroom-Inspired Dwelling For Daughter’S Wishes – A Peek Inside

A garden designer from England has fulfilled his daughter’s imaginative request by building a unique mushroom-shaped house for her.

In 2015, when his daughter was just 11 years old, she asked her father, “Dad, can you build me a house in the shape of a mushroom?” Knowing his daughter’s creative mind, Mr. Swansborough replied, “Of course! I will do it one day.”

Months passed by, and the young girl reminded her father of her special request. However, Mr. Swansborough stated he was too busy. Despite this, she revealed that she had saved £500 ($600) and wanted to contribute towards building her dream house. Seeing his daughter’s longing for the mushroom house, Mr. Swansborough couldn’t refuse her request.

Although Mr. Swansborough had experience in constructing fences and decks, he had never built anything resembling what his daughter envisioned. This challenge motivated him.

As he began the project, his passion took over. Mr. Swansborough dedicated every available moment, working on the house during weekends and evenings. He spared no expense to make it as extraordinary as possible.

The construction process presented several challenges. Due to England’s rainy weather, Mr. Swansborough often had to work under a tent. Furthermore, accessing the house required scaffolding to reach the higher points. The design itself posed difficulties, particularly the curved roof. Mr. Swansborough had to use special plywood and multiple layers to mold it into the desired shape.

Although Ms. Swansborough, Mr. Swansborough’s daughter, and his colleagues offered some assistance, the majority of the work was done by Mr. Swansborough himself. He learned to coexist with the wasps that frequented the construction site and eventually established a steady rhythm.

To achieve the desired nostalgic and quirky ambiance, Mr. Swansborough acquired a beautiful stained glass window from a car boot sale and another vintage window from a reclamation yard.

Unexpectedly, Mr. Swansborough submitted his creation for a competition and was astonished when his mushroom-shaped house won an award. “We were completely blown away and weren’t expecting to win,” he said proudly.

Nowadays, this unique mushroom house proudly stands in their garden. Central to its structure, a pole extends to the roof. The upper part of the mushroom home spans around 13 square feet and includes one flat side that rests against a neighbor’s fence. This flat wall allows for hanging decorations.

The house features a main living room on the upper floor, boasting the beautiful stained glass window and a trapdoor leading to the lower level. It also contains a glass floor that provides a view of the seasonal stream flowing beneath, and a roof window allowing for star-gazing.

This whimsical dwelling comprises multiple suites, each equipped with a bench and a desk for Ms. Swansborough to pursue her artwork. However, the mushroom house lacks a bathroom, as it was primarily intended as a fun space for sleepovers and children’s gatherings.

Ms. Swansborough, now studying fine art, was elated to witness the completed house, as were all who have experienced its cozy atmosphere and soothing sounds of the flowing river and morning birdsong. According to Mr. Swansborough, the feedback has been nothing but positive.

The mushroom house has also been appreciated by Mr. Swansborough’s son, Sebastian, who now works in the music industry. When the children were younger, the family held parties and sleepovers in this enchanting space.
