Niger State Governor Appeals for Increased Military Presence in Vulnerable Communities
Following the tragic killing of thirteen individuals by bandits in the Shiroro Local Government Area, the acting Governor of Niger State, Mr. Yakubu Garba, has urged the Nigerian Army to redeploy troops to communities prone to terrorist attacks. Garba expressed concern over the withdrawal of troops from Allawa and other vulnerable areas, as it has weakened the government’s efforts to tackle insecurity in the state.
The victims lost their lives during an ambush by bandits while on their way to their farms in Anguwan village. Garba emphasized the significance of restoring full security coverage to predominantly farming areas, such as Allawa.
The administration led by Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has implemented strategies to combat insecurity, leading to improved safety for commuters along Kuta, Gwada, Zumba, and Erena roads in Shiroro council. The victims were displaced farmers who had left Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
Malam Isah Allawa, the father of one of the victims, described the bandit attack, stating that the bandits shot eight people while five others drowned in a river while attempting to flee. He shared the horrific details of the bandits separating individuals from Allawa and Kagara in Rafi Local Government Area. The bandits allowed those from Kagara to leave while tying the hands of those from Allawa before killing them.
Murjanatu Musa, who lost her son in the attack, revealed that her deceased son was married with a daughter and that her own husband was killed by bandits in 2023. The acting governor was accompanied by the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umaru Farouk, to the three-day Fiddau prayer held for the victims.
