Kevin Mort and his wife have been residents of a house with a perpetually cold kitchen floor for the past 45 years. The mystery behind the chilling floor had remained unsolved for decades. However, a recent kitchen renovation project aimed at installing heated floors finally led to the discovery of an awe-inspiring historic secret.
Mr. Mort, a retired plumber from Cheshire, England, and his wife, who are now empty-nesters, purchased the house from Mrs. Mort’s parents, who currently reside next door. Having delved into the extensive history of their home, they believe it dates back to 1756 when it served as a pub. Over time, the property evolved, becoming a tavern, inn, and later a post office before its transformation into a residential dwelling in the 1960s.
During their recent renovation, while digging beneath the kitchen floor, the couple unexpectedly stumbled upon a distinctive wet patch and a ring of bricks. An excavation ensued, revealing a fascinating sight.
What initially seemed like a mysterious well hidden beneath their house revealed even greater wonders as Mr. Mort, confident in his plumbing skills, decided to explore further. Filming the discovery at his daughter’s suggestion, the video went viral, attracting widespread attention.
Despite conflicting opinions on how to proceed, with some suggesting the well should be covered up, Mr. Mort’s deep curiosity led him to continue the excavation. Using a metal detector, he unearthed old wine and brandy bottles within the depths of the well.
Despite the excitement of their find, the family had to return their focus to completing the kitchen renovations and restore functionality to their home, as they had a houseful of kids to attend to. Ultimately, the decision was made to preserve the ancient well, incorporating a glass cover with lights to showcase its rustic charm.
While Mr. Mort handled the well’s restoration himself, a professional company was hired to install the decorative glass cover, ensuring its safety and aesthetics. Now, the thick glass has become the favorite spot for their dogs to curl up during warm summer days.
While the family is delighted with this unique addition to their kitchen, their growing internet following, totaling 650,000 people, has expressed concerns regarding the potential similarities to the horror film “The Ring.”
Mr. Mort jokingly remarks that if he had a dollar for every time someone made that comparison, he would be wealthy. Although grateful for the opportunity to preserve this 300-year-old piece of history and enjoy it daily, he has no plans to watch the horror film anytime soon.
