The federal government has granted approval for major energy projects in Nevada, including the construction of a transmission line that will span hundreds of miles along the state’s border with California.
These transmission lines will be developed within a utility corridor stretching 210 miles in length and 3,500 feet in width. The corridor will start near Ely in White Pine County, pass through Eureka, Lander, and Churchill counties via public lands, and eventually conclude near Yerington in Lyon County.
Upon completion, this ambitious project has the potential to transmit up to 4,000 megawatts of energy, which would be sufficient to power at least 4.8 million homes.
In addition, the Libra Solar Project has also received the green light. This initiative involves the construction of a solar facility and a battery energy storage system on approximately 5,778 acres of public land in Mineral County, Nevada.
The Department of the Interior estimates that this project could generate and store enough power to meet the energy needs of over 212,000 homes, marking it as the largest solar-plus-battery energy storage project in Nevada.
Acting Deputy Secretary of the Interior, Laura Daniel-Davis, emphasized the aim of these new projects to enhance community energy resilience and generate job opportunities.
Furthermore, there is currently an open public comment period for the Bonanza Solar Project, which proposes the development of a solar facility, battery storage, and a 5.4-mile generation tie line (gen-tie) on approximately 5,133 acres of public land in Clark and Nye counties near Las Vegas.
Since 2021, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has granted approval for 41 renewable energy projects on public lands, including 10 solar, 13 geothermal, and 18 gen-tie lines. Gen-tie lines are comprised of poles, wires, cables, anchors, and foundations, facilitating the connection between nearby power generation sites and substations.
Ali Zaidi, the White House’s national climate adviser, highlighted that these projects form part of a broader strategy to combat pollution and position the United States as a leader in the global clean energy race.
“In Nevada and across the country, our significant progress in streamlining the permitting process for wind, solar, transmission, and other clean energy initiatives is an integral part of our broader strategy to take the lead in the global race for clean energy and to combat pollution,” she stated.
