Voter support and campaign funds for Vice President Kamala Harris saw a surge in August after President Joe Biden endorsed her for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination. However, recent surveys indicate that this momentum may be waning. Around 30 percent of voters still feel insufficiently informed about Harris, while nearly half consider her views to be too liberal or progressive.
With only 60 days left until election day, the survey revealed uncertain voter perceptions of Harris’s stance on key policy issues, even as former President Trump maintains support for his own bid. The survey found that 28 percent of voters expressed interest in learning more about Harris, compared to only 9 percent for Trump.
Trump’s perceived position closer to the center of the political spectrum provides an advantage. A majority of voters stated that Trump does not lean excessively left or right on policy matters, while around one-third found him too conservative. In contrast, nearly half of voters believed that Harris is too liberal or progressive, with 41 percent considering her stance to be moderate.
The upcoming debate on September 10th between Harris and Trump could have significant implications for the presidential race. Both candidates are expected to appeal to undecided voters and rally their supporters for the November elections.
During her first interview as the Democratic nominee on August 29th with CNN, Harris faced questions about her evolving positions on fracking and border security. Her shifting stance on these key issues is likely to face scrutiny during the upcoming debate.
The survey revealed a higher level of enthusiasm among Democrats, with 91 percent expressing excitement compared to 85 percent among Republicans. Additionally, voters tend to trust Harris more on abortion and democracy issues, while Trump holds an advantage on matters such as the economy and immigration.
The national survey conducted by NYT involved 1,695 registered voters from September 3rd to 6th. The poll indicated that voters remain pessimistic about the country’s direction, with only 30 percent believing the nation is on the right track.
Regarding the perception of change, 53 percent of likely voters see Trump as the candidate who can bring about change, while only 25 percent view Harris as representing change.
Harris has been preparing for the crucial debate since September 5th at a hotel in Pittsburgh. She has also been using her free time to meet with supporters, visiting Penzeys Spices, a small business in Pittsburgh’s Strip District, where she interacted with workers and local customers.
When asked if she was ready to face Trump during a press conference, Harris confidently responded, “Yes, I am”.
The debate, hosted by ABC, will take place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Both candidates will be standing throughout the 90-minute event, with two commercial breaks. The debate is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. EDT.
