Doj Confirms Unauthorized Immigrant Allegedly Committing Identity Theft And Participating In Us Electoral Process

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has revealed that an undocumented individual has agreed to plead guilty to charges of identity theft, illegal voting in elections, and obtaining a fraudulent U.S. passport.

The DOJ described the individual, named Francisco, as an illegal immigrant who assumed the identity of a U.S. citizen back in 2011. She then used this false identity to acquire a U.S. passport in the same year. She frequently traveled between Guatemala and the United States using this fraudulent passport. Even in 2021, she managed to renew the passport by maintaining her false identity and traveled to Guatemala in 2022.

The indictment states that Francisco registered to vote in Alabama under her fictitious name and proceeded to cast votes in both the 2016 and 2020 primary and general elections. The details of her political affiliations or how she voted were not disclosed. It is worth noting that Alabama has historically been a Republican stronghold, with a majority voting for former President Donald Trump in these two elections.

The investigation into Francisco’s case was conducted by the U.S. State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service and Alabama state officials, as per the DOJ’s statement.

In light of this case, the DOJ pledges its full support to law enforcement agencies in prosecuting individuals who engage in illegal voting during Alabama elections.

There is currently no information available about Francisco’s legal representation or the specific methods she used to steal the U.S. citizen’s identity. Nonetheless, court records indicate that she has agreed to plead guilty to the nine counts she faces as part of a plea agreement.

Concerns over voter fraud and the potential participation of illegal immigrants and noncitizens in elections have been raised by Republicans, including the former president, since the 2020 election.

On the other hand, a left-leaning policy group called the Brennan Center for Justice argues that instances of noncitizens voting in U.S. elections are extremely rare. According to their study of the 2016 election, election officials overseeing the tabulation of 23.5 million votes only referred approximately 30 suspected noncitizen voting incidents for further investigation or prosecution. This accounts for a mere 0.0001% of all votes cast.
