Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) has reaffirmed his claims that immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, have been reportedly consuming pets, stating that these claims originate from firsthand accounts provided by his constituents.
Vance expressed his frustration towards the American media, accusing them of ignoring these claims until he and former President Donald Trump shed light on the issue through discussions on cat memes. He emphasized his willingness to create stories if that would grab the attention of the American media towards the plight of the American people.
Responding to CNN’s inquiry regarding the validity of these allegations, Vance asserted, “Our efforts brought necessary focus, compelling the American media to address this story.”
In recent weeks, Vance utilized memes, including AI-generated ones featuring pets endorsing former President Donald Trump, to highlight the controversy. He shared these memes on conservative-leaning social media platforms, subsequently referencing the allegations during a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.
Despite the denial of these reports by the mayor of Springfield and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, the state’s attorney general confirms that police received calls substantiating the claims.
“Firstly, I want to assert that Springfield remains a beautiful city, with the welfare of your pets being ensured,” stated Springfield Mayor Rob Rue during an interview with NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo last week. He lamented the negative portrayal of the city resulting from the pet-eating allegations.
On Sunday, Governor DeWine defended the Haitian community in Springfield, claiming that many of them are not residing in the United States illegally. He emphasized the positive contributions of Haitian workers to the local economy, acknowledging the challenges faced with the sudden increase in population.
“The companies affirm that these individuals are highly skilled workers, and their presence has positively impacted the economy. However, it’s realistic to expect some challenges and issues when a population of 58,000 witnesses an influx of 15,000 people. We are actively addressing these concerns,” DeWine stated.
DeWine also acknowledged existing problems at the US-Mexico border and reiterated his support for former President Trump in the 2024 election.
During various Springfield town hall meetings, local residents made similar claims regarding Haitians resorting to destructive behavior, such as running into objects and causing damage. Anthony Harris, a resident, expressed his concerns to city officials last month, mentioning incidents of animal cruelty, without providing specific evidence or details.
Additionally, Springfield has faced multiple bomb threats recently, targeting government buildings, hospitals, and schools.
