According to federal immigration authorities, it has been revealed that over 425,000 illegal immigrants with criminal convictions are currently on the non-detained docket of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Shockingly, this number includes more than 13,000 individuals convicted of homicide, making it possible for them to roam freely within the United States, as they are not in ICE custody.
Lechleitner’s letter to Gonzales provides further details, stating that as of July 21, there has been a total of 662,566 illegal immigrants with criminal histories on the agency’s national docket. Among them, 435,719 have already been convicted of crimes, while an additional 226,847 are currently facing pending criminal charges.
Out of the total number of convicted criminals, a staggering 425,431 are not currently detained, which means they are under some form of ICE supervision but are not held in ICE custody. Shockingly, this group includes 13,099 individuals convicted of homicide, with an additional 1,845 facing charges related to homicide.
However, being on ICE’s non-detained docket does not necessarily mean that all these individuals are freely wandering in American communities. Many of them might be under various forms of legal supervision or serving time in federal, state, or local prisons for their crimes. Additionally, some individuals on the non-detained docket may have already completed their sentences for their criminal convictions and are currently under ICE supervision, awaiting immigration proceedings.
The Department of Homeland Security spokesperson clarified that the data includes findings from the past four decades, with most custody determinations being made before the current administration. The list also comprises individuals who are already under the jurisdiction or incarcerated under federal, state, or local law enforcement partners.
Former President Donald Trump utilized social media to criticize Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, for allowing an unvetted and unchecked influx of dangerous foreign criminals. Trump pledged to reinstate border policies from his administration, complete the southern border wall, execute the largest deportation operation in American history, and impose stricter penalties for illegal border crossings if elected in November.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who was assigned by President Joe Biden to address the issue of illegal immigration, has faced considerable criticism regarding her handling of the border crisis. During a speech in Douglas, Arizona, on September 27, she advocated for stricter asylum policies.
Harris declared, “Those who cross our borders unlawfully will be apprehended, removed, and barred from reentering for five years. We will pursue more severe criminal charges against repeat violators. Furthermore, if someone unlawfully crosses our border without making an asylum request at a legal point of entry, they will be denied asylum.” She emphasized her commitment to implement these policies if elected.
Despite Harris’s proposed changes, the Biden administration defends its current border policies by emphasizing the balance between humane treatment of illegal border-crossers and the enforcement of immigration laws.
On June 4, President Biden signed a proclamation to suspend asylum requests from illegal immigrants once the daily number of crossings reached 5,000. However, on his first day in office, he rescinded many of Trump’s immigration policies, including the policy of forcing asylum seekers to remain in Mexico until receiving a court date from U.S. immigration authorities.
