Samoan Boxing Coach Passes Away At Olympic Village.

The national boxing coach of Samoa, Lionel Elika Fatupaito, has tragically passed away after experiencing a cardiac arrest at the Olympic village in Paris, as confirmed by officials and various reports.

Recognized as one of Samoa’s most accomplished boxing coaches and an avid proponent of the Olympic spirit, Mr. Pauga expressed his condolences in a statement provided by the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) on behalf of the Samoa NOC.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with Lionel’s family, as well as his boxers and friends. He will be deeply missed,” added Mr. Pauga.

Mr. Pauga and the Secretary General of the Samoa NOC, Maureen Tuimalealiifano, held a meeting with the Samoan delegation for a briefing and team prayer prior to the opening ceremony in Paris, as per the ONOC.

The International Boxing Association (IBA) also expressed its deepest condolences: “We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Lionel Elika Fatupaito, the national boxing coach of Samoa, who tragically passed away during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games,” stated the association.

Respecting the privacy of Mr. Elikas’ family and the Samoan athletes during this challenging time, the Samoa NOC, as stated by the ONOC press release, will refrain from releasing any further statements regarding his passing.
