The Los Angeles Angels staged an impressive comeback on Tuesday night, July 30th, overcoming a four-run deficit to defeat the Colorado Rockies 10-7 in Anaheim, California.
Matt Thaiss had a standout performance, driving in a career-high five runs for the Angels. He also made history as the first Angels catcher to achieve the rare feat of driving in five runs and stealing two bases in a single game. This accomplishment has only been achieved once before in Major League Baseball history, by Detroit’s Mickey Cochrane in 1934.
Angels Manager Ron Washington praised Thaiss’ contributions, stating, “He just delivered big tonight, but he’s been there before every time he plays, whether it’s getting pitchers through innings or coming up with big hits.” It was Thaiss’ fifth start of the month.
Taylor Ward also made significant contributions, driving in three runs for the Angels. The team trailed 6-2 after two innings but displayed determination and came out victorious, marking their sixth win in nine games.
Los Angeles took the lead at 7-6 before the seventh-inning home run by the Rockies’ Ezequiel Tovar off Jos Qujada. The Angels’ impressive streak of retiring 16 consecutive batters was disrupted by the home run. However, Jo Adell quickly responded with a go-ahead home run in the bottom half of the inning, securing the win for the Angels.
Matt Thaiss expressed his excitement about the comeback, stating, “It was a lot of fun to be down like we were and to claw back and fight back. That was really cool.”
Zach Neto appeared to drive in a run with a sacrifice bunt in the eighth inning, but a video review overturned the call. The Rockies’ pitcher, Justin Lawrence, was determined to have fielded the ball and tagged Neto before he reached first base. Thaiss later secured another RBI with a single.
Hunter Strickland sealed the victory for the Angels, earning his first save since August 1st, 2022, when he played for Cincinnati.
The Colorado Rockies’ struggles continue, as they suffered their fifth consecutive loss and fell to a 14-41 record on the road. Their home record at Coors Field in Denver stands at 24-29.
Ryan McMahon’s three-run home run and Ezequiel Tovar’s two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored were not enough to secure the win for the Rockies. Rockies starter Cal Quantrill had a rough performance, allowing seven runs and nine hits in just 3 2/3 innings.
Rockies Manager Bud Black recognized the team’s offensive effort but emphasized their pitching struggles, stating, “It was good to see the guys have a really good effort offensively. We just didn’t pitch well. That was the bottom line. One of those rare games where we score a bunch, and we gave up a bunch. The pitching wasn’t up to par at all today.”
