Gene Sperling, a senior adviser at the White House, has announced his departure from his role to join Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. President Biden commended Sperling for his instrumental role in executing a rescue plan that resulted in one of the most equitable and resilient economic recoveries in history. Sperling played a crucial role in advising on economic matters and successfully handled challenging assignments, such as working with major automakers and the United Auto Workers union to secure record contracts.
At the Harris campaign, Sperling, aged 65, will serve as a top economic adviser. The campaign has been actively recruiting new staff, including senior adviser David Plouffe, who successfully managed Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.
Sperling’s association with Harris dates back to her tenure as California’s attorney general. Since joining the current administration in March 2021, Sperling has played a major role in coordinating the American Rescue Plan, which provided temporary child tax credits and emergency assistance to millions of families affected by the pandemic.
The Republican Party voiced opposition to this legislative effort, expressing concerns over potential inflationary effects.
This announcement coincides with Harris’s forthcoming campaign trips, beginning on August 6th, where she will be joined by her yet-to-be-announced running mate for a rally in Philadelphia. She will also visit several other key states, including Arizona, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Nevada, Michigan, and Georgia.
Sperling’s departure follows the announcement of senior adviser Anita Dunn’s exit from the White House after serving two terms. President Biden, who declined to run for re-election in July, has seen several influential figures from his administration step down.
Sperling, who previously served during the Clinton and Obama administrations as the head of the White House’s National Economic Council and worked in the Treasury Department during the Obama era, has a rich history of advising prominent political figures, including President Bill Clinton and New York Governor Mario Cuomo.
