Contracting work can often be a frustrating experience, as many homeowners can attest to. The vast majority of contractor experiences receive average ratings, with only a small percentage earning a five-star rating. Disappointments such as contractors not showing up for long periods or delivering incorrect materials leading to delays are all too common.

Recently, I witnessed a particularly troublesome situation unfold over the course of six weeks. A friend of mine decided to install a patio in their backyard, and from the beginning, I could tell there would be issues. I found it difficult to simply stand by and watch.

One of the first problems occurred during the installation of the underground electrical conduit. This conduit was meant to provide power for a future hot tub and outdoor kitchen. Proper installation of such conduits is crucial, as it becomes nearly impossible to do so once the patio is completed. However, the electrician on the job failed to take these considerations into account and made no provisions for future upgrades.

A few days later, when the hot tub was installed and the electrician returned, they direct-wired the hot tub in a way that the homeowner did not want. The situation regarding the outdoor kitchen remains uncertain.

An example from my own past further illustrates the issues homeowners can face with contractors. When installing the plumbing, radiant heat, and electric systems in my daughter’s new home, we encountered numerous frustrations with the builder. Despite providing detailed plans, including precise enlarged detail drawings, the builder and their employees often disregarded our instructions and did things their own way. This lack of attention to detail led to multiple errors during construction, such as using incorrect house wrap and failing to follow installation instructions.

Time and again, I receive emails from homeowners who have had nightmarish experiences with various types of contractors. Ultimately, the cause of this misery boils down to homeowners placing too much trust in the contractor and failing to assume an active role in quality control.

To ensure a successful outcome, homeowners must take ownership and actively participate in the construction process. This means having regular meetings with the contractor and subcontractors at crucial stages of the work. Simply conveying your desires verbally or relying solely on plans is not enough; you must have ongoing discussions and monitor progress closely.

While this may seem like a significant commitment, it is essential for a satisfactory result. Thankfully, it is easier than ever to educate yourself on proper installation techniques. Many manufacturers provide clear and informative videos on their websites, detailing the correct procedures.

On larger projects, conducting your own quality checks is crucial. Verify measurements, ensure the correct products have been ordered, and inspect them upon arrival at the job site.

It is understandable that some homeowners may find this level of involvement burdensome. However, the reality is that finding exceptional contractors has become increasingly difficult in recent years. To ensure the success of your project, it is necessary to roll up your sleeves and actively oversee the work being done.
