At least six individuals have reportedly lost their lives and over ten thousand others have been displaced in twelve communities following a heavy downpour that lasted for several hours in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria.
Reports from the area indicate that the flood has also affected 1,711 households, forcing them to seek refuge in eight camps established by the authorities. The flood has caused massive destruction to houses, shops, boreholes, and other valuable assets in the affected areas. Additionally, approximately 1000 hectares of land have been submerged, and bridges linking Borno and Adamawa states have been severely affected.
During an on-the-spot assessment in the affected communities, the Head of Operations of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) office in Yola, Ayuba Ladan, disclosed that more than ten people have sustained injuries as a result of the flood.
The communities worst hit by the flood include Kirchinga, Duhu, Maiwandu, Jahili, Kokohu, Lumadu, Zhau, Palam, Kwambula, Shuware, and Shuwa. In response, the Local Government Council, in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross, has established eight IDP camps to cater to the needs of the affected individuals and families.
Meanwhile, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, the Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, has appealed to the Federal Government to provide assistance in mitigating the sufferings of the flood victims in Madagali Local Government Area. The state government, through the State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), has already approved relief materials to be distributed to the victims.
During a condolence visit to the flood victims in Madagali, Deputy Governor Farauta expressed deep sorrow over the extensive destruction of houses and farmlands. He called on the Federal Government and humanitarian donors to provide support to the victims, as more communities continue to be affected by the flood. He assured the affected individuals and families that the government will prioritize their welfare and provide necessary assistance.
Mustafa Mohammad, the District Head of Duhu, and the Council Chairman, Mr Simon Musa Shashi, also appealed to the federal and state governments to intervene promptly, emphasizing the risk of disease outbreaks in the affected areas.
