Former world champion, Tobi Amusan, is set to commence her pursuit of her first Olympics medal today as she takes to lane 9 in the first heat of the 100m hurdles first round at the Stade de France in Paris, France.
The talented athlete, who clinched the world title in Oregon, United States two years ago, will be competing against Alaysha Johnson from the USA, Maribel Vanessa Caicedo from Ecuador, and Janeek Brown from Jamaica in her heat.
Johnson holds a personal best of 12.31, while Amusan’s personal season best stands at 12.40. In their previous 10 faceoffs, Amusan has outperformed the American in eight of them.
Three years ago, Amusan finished fourth in her first Olympic final in the same event in Tokyo. Now, at the age of 27, she aims to surpass her previous achievement and make history as the first Nigerian athlete to become both World and Olympic champion.
If Amusan secures a medal, she will join Glory Alozie as only the second Nigerian to win a medal in the 100m hurdles event at the Olympics. Alozie won silver at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
