Anambra Establishes Fund And Other Initiatives To Empower Persons With Disabilities

Anambra State Disability Rights Commission (ASDRC) has announced its plans to establish a fund and implement various initiatives aimed at improving the lives of persons living with disabilities (PWDs) in all 326 electoral wards. This decision is in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision of creating a livable and prosperous city for all residents.

During a media briefing held in Awka, the state capital, Barr. Chukwuka Ezewuzie, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the commission, revealed that the formation of a fund committee for PWDs was one of the outcomes of their recent quarterly meeting. This committee, mandated by Section 16 of the Anambra State Disability Rights Law 2018, will be chaired by Bishop Moses Ezedebeago, a member of the commission.

The commission also intends to appoint commission liaison officers (CLOs) in all 326 electoral wards, as well as in 179 communities and 21 local government areas. Regular collaborations with local government chairmen, community leaders, traditional rulers, and religious institutions will be maintained to ensure effective implementation of initiatives.

To combat poverty among PWDs, the commission plans to establish an Access Market Pavilion (AMP), a cooperative society for PWDs, and provide credit facilities for disabled entrepreneurs. Additionally, trade fairs for merchants and skilled PWDs will be organized. The commission intends to work closely with various stakeholders to achieve these objectives.

Furthermore, Chairman Chukwuka Ezewuzie expressed his appreciation to Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his support in employment of PWDs in the state civil service, their inclusion in the ongoing “one youth two skills” scheme, and involving them in the distribution of cash crops. The commission is also working towards ensuring accessibility to all public places as mandated by the law.
