Apc Withdraws From Anambra Lg Polls, Decides To Seek Legal Redress

The Anambra State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has decided to withdraw from the upcoming local government elections in the state. These elections, scheduled for September 28, 2024, are the first to be held in 11 years since the administration of former Governor Peter Obi. The party has also taken legal action against Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the state Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), and the state House of Assembly.

Mr. Basil Ejidike, the state Chairman of the APC, addressed local government and ward party chairmen in Awka, the state capital, yesterday. He explained that participating in the election would essentially be endorsing an activity considered illegal by the party. He further stated that ANSIEC and Governor Soludo are not demonstrating a willingness to conduct the exercise in a manner that is fair, transparent, and credible.

Governor Soludo has already established a tribunal at the Anambra State High Court in Awka, designed to handle cases brought by political parties contesting the outcome of the election. It appears that Governor Soludo is not adequately prepared to provide the people of Anambra with a locally governed system that is accountable and transparent.

Ejidike asserted that the APC is currently challenging the election process in court. As a major opposition party in Anambra State, he believes it is crucial for the APC to lead by example. He commended the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party for also taking legal action against the irregularities observed in the election. Ejidike encouraged party members to remain focused and informed them that the party would soon initiate a tour of the 21 local government areas as part of preparations for the 2025 governorship election in the state.

The party observed a moment of silence in honor of the late Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, who was a prominent governorship aspirant of the party before his passing.
