The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has faced criticism for his recent remarks about the future governance of Abia State. Kalu, who holds the position of the number six citizen in Nigeria, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, declared that it would be an aberration for another party besides the APC to govern Abia State in 2027.
His statement has been viewed as a threat to democracy and the people of Abia State. Kalu confidently asserted in an interview that the APC candidate would be the next governor of the state in 2027, and even claims to have relayed this message to the current governor of Abia State.
Kalu’s comments have drawn criticism from fellow member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, who accused him of arrogance and power drunkenness. The Abia State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has also issued a statement expressing their concern over Kalu’s assumption that he has the authority to speak for the people of Abia State.
The PDP argues that Kalu is out of touch with the sentiments of the people and is prioritizing the interests of his political supporters in Abuja over those of the state. They highlight the progress made under the current Governor Otti while also noting the mismanagement and insecurity that plagued the state in the past. The PDP accuses Kalu of wanting to return the state to the era of poor governance, dilapidated infrastructure, and economic decline.
The party questions Kalu’s fixation on his position as the number six man in the country and suggests that he may not even be reelected in 2027. They also challenge his attitude towards Governor Otti, wondering if Kalu believes he can bully or undermine the governor’s achievements. Ultimately, the PDP asserts that it will be the people’s choice in 2027, and time will reveal the outcome.
