Bleday And Langeliers Lead The Way As Past Mets Triumph In Longest Nine-Inning Game Under Pitch Clock

The Oakland Athletics pulled off an impressive comeback to defeat the New York Mets 7-6 in an extra-long nine-inning game. The matchup, which took place on a hot and humid afternoon with a first-pitch temperature of 85 degrees, lasted three hours and 45 minutes, setting a new record for the longest nine-inning game since the introduction of the pitch clock last season.

Oakland’s JJ Bleday contributed to the victory with his first career grand slam, while Shea Langeliers continued his impressive performance by reaching base five times. Langeliers went 3 for 4 with a walk and was hit by a pitch, maintaining his streak of strong offensive displays in recent games. Throughout the series against the Mets, Langeliers reached base a total of 11 times in 15 plate appearances, showcasing an impressive on-base percentage of .733.

Despite leaving a season-high 16 runners on base, the Athletics managed to secure the win. Bleday’s grand slam in the fourth inning served as a turning point in the game, igniting the offense and getting the team back in contention. The As tied the game in the sixth inning with an RBI groundout from Tyler Nevin, followed by a go-ahead single by Seth Brown that allowed Langeliers to score.

The pitching performances were also noteworthy, with Tyler Ferguson and Scott Alexander delivering strong outings to keep the Mets at bay. Mason Miller stepped up with a six-out save, his 18th of the season, including a crucial final out in the ninth inning.

On the Mets’ side, Mark Vientos hit two home runs, and Luis Torrens contributed a two-run single. However, the team struggled with their pitching, walking a total of 11 batters, their highest number of walks issued since 2020.

The Mets now find themselves two games behind the Atlanta Braves in the race for the third National League wild-card spot, highlighting the importance of making adjustments and improving their performance on the field.

The game provided some entertaining moments as well. Max Schuemann of the Athletics entertained the crowd in the fourth inning when he raced all the way from first base to home on a foul ball, catching the Mets’ defense off guard.

In their upcoming matchup, the Mets are set to face the Miami Marlins in a three-game series, with Sean Manaea starting for the Athletics and Roddery Muoz expected to take the mound for the Marlins.
