Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, DTigress, is poised to face hosts France in their second Group B match at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This game is likely to determine the group leader.
Both teams secured dramatic victories in their opening games at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, it is France who currently holds the top spot in Group B with a superior point difference, making this upcoming matchup crucial for both teams.
France and Nigeria have faced each other three times before, with France winning twice and Nigeria winning once. In their most recent encounter in the 2022 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Nigeria emerged as the winners with a surprising 67-65 triumph. Victoria Macaulay led the scoring with 18 points, while Oderah Chidom dominated in rebounds and assists.
After witnessing DTigress’ stunning performance against the third-ranked team, Australia, nobody would underestimate Nigeria. Ezinne Kalu, reflecting on the victory over Australia, emphasized the team’s relentless defensive prowess, stating, “When we are on the court, we smell blood. Nobody defends quite like us, and that is what keeps us going.”
A win against France, who won bronze in the previous Olympic Games in Tokyo, would secure DTigress four points from two games and guarantee qualification, regardless of the outcome between Canada and Australia.
In their opening game against Canada, France displayed a high level of quality play. Marieme Badiane contributed 13 points and led in rebounds with 6, while Gabby Williams scored 12 points and led the team in assists with 8. If Nigeria allows Badiane and Williams any opportunities near the basket, they can expect them to capitalize and inflict damage.
