Former Nigerian international, Dimeji Lawal, has called on the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to appoint a permanent head coach for the Super Eagles, urging the federation to end the dual role Augustine Eguavoen holds. Eguavoen was brought in as an interim manager after negotiations between the NFF and German coach Bruno Labaddia fell through. The Federation has extended Eguavoen’s stay until a new manager is appointed.
However, Lawal believes this arrangement is not sustainable and has urged the NFF to make a clear decision about the future of the national team’s coaching staff. Lawal stated, “If we want to stick with local, indigenous coaches, I fully support that. We have several capable ones in Nigeria.” He also emphasized that Eguavoen cannot continue in both the technical director and the head coach roles. Lawal pointed out that there are many qualified Nigerian coaches who have achieved remarkable results, even defeating foreign counterparts. He believes it is time to give these coaches a clear mandate and the full backing they need to lead the team.
