Former Blackhawks General Manager, Stan Bowman, Has Been Named As The New General Manager Of The Oilers

Stan Bowman, a veteran in the hockey industry, has been appointed as the new general manager and executive vice president of hockey operations for the Edmonton Oilers. This comes nearly three years after his resignation from the Chicago Blackhawks following a scandal.

Bowman, aged 51, had an illustrious 20-year tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks, serving as the general manager for the final 12 seasons. He led the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2010, 2013, and 2015. However, he stepped down in October 2021 amidst an investigation into sexual-assault allegations made by former player Kyle Beach against the Blackhawks’ then-video coach, Brad Aldrich.

The investigation revealed that Bowman and other members of the administration had inadequately responded to the allegations. Consequently, Bowman, along with former Blackhawks executive Al MacIsaac and ex-Coach Joel Quenneville, faced suspensions imposed by the NHL.

Fortunately, on July 1, they were reinstated by the league, acknowledging their sincere remorse for the events and their increased understanding of the responsibilities held by NHL personnel, especially those in leadership positions.

Now, with the Edmonton Oilers, Bowman has been offered a second chance to make a mark. The Oilers reached the Stanley Cup Final last season, falling just one game short of victory against the Florida Panthers. Bowman replaces Ken Holland, whose contract expired and was not renewed.

Jeff Jackson, Edmontons CEO of hockey operations, expressed his enthusiasm for Bowmans arrival, stating, “I am excited and pleased to be welcoming Stan to the Edmonton Oilers. I believe his vast experience and proven success in this role, together with the important work he has done in his time away from the game, fits our goal of being best in class when it comes to all facets of our organization.”

Furthermore, Jackson highlighted the shared vision of Bowman and the team, as they strive towards another Stanley Cup title. During his time with the Chicago Blackhawks, Bowman achieved an impressive record of 493310109, including winning the Presidents Trophy for the NHL’s best regular-season record in 2013.

It is worth noting that Bowman’s affiliation with hockey runs in the family, as he is the son of the renowned NHL coach and general manager, Scotty Bowman.
