In a provisional decision, France has been chosen as the host for the 2030 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The bid from the French Alps, which was favored by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in June, was approved on Wednesday. However, the final hosting decision is contingent upon France providing financial guarantees.
Due to the recent elections, the French government has been unable to provide the necessary state and regional guarantees to the IOC. France President Emmanuel Macron has stated that he will not announce a new government until after the conclusion of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, which are set to begin this week. President Macron has expressed his commitment to the Olympic Games, assuring that he will request the incoming prime minister to prioritize providing the required guarantees and enacting an Olympic law.
This will mark France’s fourth time hosting the Winter Olympics, with the previous hosting being in 1992 in Albertville. The regions of Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur have been selected to host all major events at the 2030 Games. The city of Salt Lake City, Utah, has also been chosen to host the 2034 Winter Games.
