MAO SAIGO SHOOTS RECORD-BREAKING ROUND AT CPKC WOMEN’S OPEN
In an impressive display of skill and precision, Mao Saigo emerged as the frontrunner at the CPKC Womens Open on Saturday. Playing at the Earl Grey Golf Club, Saigo recorded a remarkable 11-under 61, the lowest round ever recorded in the history of the tournament. Despite her exemplary performance, Saigo finds herself tied for third place, trailing Haeran Ryu by five strokes and Lauren Coughlin by four.
The extreme winds that had plagued the tournament in previous days subsided, allowing Saigo to take full advantage of the favorable conditions. Her strategic approach focused on capitalizing on the par 5s and leveraging her iron shots. “I was aiming to make birdies on the par 5s while relying on my strength in iron play,” stated a jubilant Saigo through her translator.
One particularly outstanding moment in Saigo’s round came on the 10th hole, where she made an eagle from 133 yards with a pitching wedge. Speaking about the support she received from the fans, Saigo said, “I was able to feel the energy from the fans, and that positively impacted my game.”
Not only did Saigo surpass the tournament record of 62, but she also claimed the title of lowest round score previously held by Song Hee-Kim, Mo Martin, Paula Reto, and Lindy Duncan. Her extraordinary achievement solidifies her position as a rising star to watch in golf.
Despite her success, Saigo remains humble, explaining, “I never set a target score; I always strive to make the best shot on each occasion. Today, I maintained that attitude, and it translated into my score.”
Meanwhile, Haeran Ryu continued to impress with a solid round of 64, placing her at 13-under 203. Ryu had an incredible start, birdieing four of the first six holes. Although Ryu acknowledges Saigo’s exceptional performance, she remarked, “I started five holes, and I was 5 under par, so I am also having a crazy day. It’s quite amusing.”
Lauren Coughlin, the overnight leader, remained in contention with a respectable score of 66. The 31-year-old golfer, who is yet to secure a win on the LPGA Tour, has been consistently performing well recently and intends to maintain her focus amidst the stiff competition.
Canadian player Rose Zhang showed her prowess with an impressive score of 66, tying with Saigo at 8 under. Jennifer Kupcho shot a 68, placing her at 7 under, followed by Lilia Vu and Hannah Green at 6 under.
Former champion Lydia Ko struggled to find her rhythm, finishing the day at 3 under par after recording a 72. Brooke Henderson, the 2018 winner, currently sits tied for 18th place at 2 under par.
Despite the subsiding winds, the Earl Grey Golf Club still presents a formidable challenge, requiring players to make strategic decisions and precise shots. With the competition heating up, only time will tell who will emerge as the ultimate victor of the CPKC Womens Open.
