Team Nigeria’s sole representative in the Paris Olympics Badminton event, Anuoluwapo Opeyori, suffered a defeat in his opening Group match in the Men’s Singles category yesterday.
The captain of Team Nigeria faced a tough opponent in Tobias Kuenzi from Switzerland and lost the match in two sets.
Opeyori displayed a commendable performance in the first set, even leading with three set points. However, he narrowly lost the set in a tie-break with a score of 22-20.
In the second set, Opeyori struggled to keep up with Kuenzi’s skill and eventually lost with a score of 14-21.
Opeyori will have another chance to prove himself and make a comeback this evening as he faces China’s SF Li on the court.
Having previously competed in the Olympics in Tokyo, Opeyori’s participation in the Paris Olympics marks a significant achievement as he becomes the first Nigerian athlete to make back-to-back appearances at the games.
