Webb Emerges As Dominant Pitcher, Throws Shutout Against Athletics For Second Time In Career.

San Francisco – Logan Webb delivered a masterful performance, recording his second career shutout as the San Francisco Giants triumphed over the Oakland Athletics with an impressive 10-0 victory on Wednesday night. The game, characterized by remarkable efficiency, concluded in a rapid one hour and 55 minutes.

Webb (8-8) showcased his exceptional pitching skills by striking out six batters and effectively containing the Athletics to just five singles and a walk. This marked his first complete game of the season and the third of his career, with his previous shutout occurring on July 9, 2023, during a dominating 10-0 win against the Colorado Rockies.

Giants Manager Bob Melvin praised Webb’s exceptional performance, stating, “As the game went along, he just got better and better. His movement was back today. Backdoor sinkers, changeups going straight down.”

Webb demonstrated remarkable accuracy, with 73 of his 106 pitches landing within the strike zone and resulting in 14 groundball outs. It is worth noting that Webb had struggled in his last three starts, conceding at least four earned runs in each game.

Reflecting on his outstanding performance, Webb acknowledged his recent challenges and displayed a determined mindset, saying, “It’s a known thing I’ve been struggling a little bit, so I just wanted to go out there and get back to what I’m good at. Today was a perfect example of that. [Catcher Patrick Bailey] called a great game, and the defense was amazing behind me. It was an all-around great game.”

The San Francisco Giants snapped a three-game losing streak against their Bay Bridge rivals, resulting in a split series. The teams are scheduled to face each other two more times on August 17 and 18, but in Oakland this time.

Oakland’s Ross Stripling (2-10) demonstrated solid performance against his former team, allowing only one run on four hits, with a walk and no strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

As Manager Mark Kotsay commended Stripling, stating, “Ross did a great job. Getting through 5 2/3 innings of baseball and only giving up one run, I thought he did a phenomenal job for us, keeping us in the game and managing the workload.”

Stripling had played with the Giants last season before being traded to the Oakland Athletics in February. Unfortunately, his record at Oracle Park remains winless at 0-5.

Speaking about the unique dynamic of facing his former teammates, Stripling remarked, “Obviously, this one was meaningful. I played here last year, basically tipping my cap to the first seven of the nine guys I faced, saying ‘What’s up?’ You know, those guys are buds. It’s always kind of a weird dynamic.”

In the fifth inning, Mike Yastrzemski and Marco Luciano hit back-to-back singles, placing runners on the corners. Brett Wisely followed with a sacrifice fly, ultimately securing the only run of the game.

Miguel Andujar and JJ Bleday each contributed two hits for the Athletics, while Abraham Toro’s single in the ninth inning briefly raised hopes of a comeback. However, Seth Brown’s subsequent groundout to second base brought the game to a close.

Kotsay acknowledged the team’s solid performance on the mound, stating, “We’ll put tonight’s game behind us offensively. We did a great job on the mound. The bullpen did a great job of keeping the game at one run and giving us a chance to win.”
