The Nigerian Army has admitted that one of its soldiers killed a 16-year-old teenager named Ismail Mohammed during the #EndBadGovernance protest in Zaria, Kaduna State. The protest initially started peacefully, but it eventually turned violent in different parts of the country.
In response to the claims made by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) that live ammunition was not used on the protesters, the Nigerian Army confirmed the death of Ismail Mohammed. Amnesty International condemned the use of lethal force by security personnel, accusing them of deploying tactics intended to cause fatalities.
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, criticized the police for suppressing peaceful protesters and urged them to redirect their efforts towards combating banditry.
Muyiwa Adejobi, the police spokesperson, had previously acknowledged instances of killings during the protest but denied police involvement. However, the Nigerian Army has admitted that a soldier fired a warning shot, which resulted in the death of the 16-year-old protester, Ismail Mohammed. The soldier responsible has been arrested and is under investigation.
In a recent development, the Nigerian Army has reportedly compensated the family of Ismail Mohammed with a sum of N300,000. This compensation has sparked mixed reactions on the internet.
