Canada Achieves Historic Victory Over The United States On American Soil, Triumphing In A Friendly Match With A Score Of 2-1. This Marks The First Win For Canada Against The United States Since The Year 1957.

Canada secured a historic 2-1 victory over the United States in a friendly match on Saturday in Kansas City, Kansas. It marked Canada’s first win against the Americans on U.S. soil since 1957.

After suffering defeats to Panama and Uruguay at the Copa America, the U.S. has now experienced three consecutive losses for the first time since 2015 when they were defeated by Brazil, Mexico, and Costa Rica.

Canada took the lead in the 17th minute when Jacob Shaffelburg capitalized on a defensive error by the U.S. Tim Ream’s pass bounced away from Johnny Cardoso, allowing Shaffelburg to find the back of the net. In the 58th minute, Jonathan David extended Canada’s lead after Ream made another mistake, losing possession in front of his own goal.

The U.S. managed to pull one back in the 66th minute through Luca de la Torre, who scored his first international goal with an assist from Aidan Morris. However, Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crpeau denied Ricardo Pepi’s open shot in the 86th minute, preserving Canada’s lead.

This game marked the debut of interim coach Mikey Varas for the American team. The U.S. Soccer Federation has been in discussions since mid-August with Mauricio Pochettino to become their 10th coach in 14 years, but no official comments have been made yet. On the other hand, Canada appointed American Jesse Marsch as coach in May, and they finished fourth in the Copa America.

Historically, Canada had been winless against the U.S. in America for 23 consecutive games until their triumph in this match. Their only previous victory on U.S. soil came in a World Cup qualifier on July 6, 1957, when they defeated the Americans 3-2 in St. Louis.

Canada dominated the first half, outshooting a static U.S. team 11-1.

Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte made his second international start, replacing Matt Turner who hasn’t played a club match since April 2. Tim Ream, after his transfer from Fulham to Charlotte, was among the starters.

In the previous six matches, no MLS players had been in the starting lineup, and out of the 198 starting positions available since the 2022 World Cup, only eight have been filled by MLS players.

Canada capitalized on a defensive lapse by Schulte, who hesitated after a backpass and played the ball wide to Ream. Ream’s pass to Cardoso bounced away, intercepted by Stephen Eustquio, who then set up Shaffelburg for his fourth goal in 17 international appearances.

This goal marked the first time in 19 games since 1985 that the U.S. conceded the opening goal on home soil.

Jonathan David scored the second goal for Canada, taking advantage of Ream’s giveaway. David received the ball after Cyle Larin’s pass was deflected by Kristoffer Lund, and he beat Schulte at the near post from 7 yards. With this goal, David equaled Larin’s record of 29 career goals for Canada.

Six U.S. players from the Copa America loss to Uruguay were retained for this match: Ream, Chris Richards, Joe Scally, Yunus Musah, Folarin Balogun, and Christian Pulisic.
