The Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Julius Abure, has officially reversed the automatic ticket previously reserved for the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for the upcoming 2027 elections.
This decision was made during the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday.
According to a statement issued, the party has decided to open all electoral tickets, from the presidency to the state assemblies, to all eligible Nigerians, indicating a shift towards inclusivity within the party’s structure.
This move follows a stakeholders meeting held in Umuahia, Abia State, where Peter Obi, Alex Otti, and other Labour Party leaders appointed a 29-member caretaker committee to oversee party leadership for the next 90 days.

However, in a communique signed by Julius Abure and National Secretary Umar Ibrahim, the NEC invalidated the decisions made at the Umuahia meeting, emphasizing that there is no leadership vacuum within the party.
The Abure-led NEC highlighted the party’s March 2024 National Convention in Anambra as evidence that the leadership was properly constituted.
The NEC also called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to refrain from facilitating any attempts by Governor Alex Otti to interfere with party matters.
The Labour Party reaffirmed its support for Abure’s leadership and empowered the National Working Committee (NWC) to conduct state, local government, and ward congresses, as well as fill vacant positions in the party’s leadership.
In addition, the NEC approved the establishment of a disciplinary committee and expressed a willingness to review past disciplinary actions as part of a reconciliation process.
The party reiterated its commitment to promoting unity and upholding democratic values in the future.
