Several energy experts and key officials in Nigeria’s economy are advocating for the implementation of sustainable practices in the exploration, production, and utilization of oil and gas products. Their goal is to protect the environment from harmful emissions.

This call was made during a webinar titled “Transitioning Away from Emissions, Not Oil and Gas.” The event was organized by the Nigerian Institution of Petroleum Engineers (NiPeTE) in collaboration with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry Professional Practice Group (LCCI PPG).

Addressing the role of oil and gas in global emissions, Dr. Nuhu Habib, former Executive Commissioner in charge of Development and Production at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), stated that while oil and gas production contributes to emissions, it is not the leading source of global greenhouse gases. He emphasized that oil and gas will remain crucial for the global economy for the next 50 years.

Dr. Habib further highlighted that industrial emissions from oil and gas only account for approximately 15% of the total. He emphasized that the real challenge lies in addressing broader industrial activities responsible for greenhouse gas emissions.

Mr. Gabriel Idahosa, President and Chairman of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), drew attention to the significant emissions from gas flaring and other petroleum activities in Nigeria. He emphasized the urgent need for innovative approaches to decarbonize the economy while ensuring the continued growth and stability driven by the oil and gas sector. This sector plays a vital role in Nigeria’s economy, contributing around 90% of export revenues and 60% of government revenue.

Prisca Kanebi, National Chairman of NiPeTE, stressed the importance of finding a balance between global greenhouse gas reduction goals and Nigeria’s development needs.

Dr. Mohammed Malami, Planning and Commercial Senior Officer at the Gas and Power Investment Services division of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), called for the strategic integration of low-carbon technologies and improved operational efficiency. He believes that reducing emissions without completely eliminating oil and gas can be achieved through this approach.
