Nigerian Jatau Claims Gold Medal In World Beach Sambo Championships Debut

Nigeria has once again demonstrated its prowess on the global stage as Charity Jatau claimed the gold medal in the Women’s 50kg category at the inaugural World Beach Sambo Championships held in Casablanca, Morocco.

The two-day tournament, which concluded on Sunday, September 8, witnessed teams and athletes from around the world competing in various events. Jatau, a gold medalist at the African Games and Championships, proved to be unbeatable in her weight category. She emerged victorious after defeating opponents from Morocco, Kazakhstan, and Romania, proudly representing Nigeria as the sole flagbearer at the prestigious international championships.

Expressing her joy, Jatau described the victory as the result of her year-long hard work and vowed to strive for even greater success in the future. She gratefully acknowledged the efforts of the Sambo Association of Nigeria (SAN), led by President Loveth Howells and Vice President Sheriff Hammed, for making it possible for her to participate in the championship. Despite facing challenges, their personal support and unwavering dedication ensured Nigeria’s representation in Morocco. Jatau’s triumph serves as an inspiration for other athletes in Nigeria to embrace Sambo and pursue excellence in the sport.

The presence of the SAN President at the tournament underscores Nigeria’s commitment to embracing Sambo as a sport, with ongoing efforts to increase its popularity in the country.

In his remarks, Sheriff Hammed, the Vice President, commended President Loveth Howells for her dedication to the sport and pledged to encourage more people to get involved. The SAN is actively engaging with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to consider Sambo as a medal event at the Olympic Games.
