The National Assembly is taking steps to strengthen the regulatory function of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) by repealing and enacting the NIMC Act No. 23.
Once the NIMC repeal and enactment bill becomes law, it will streamline the registration process, reduce bureaucratic hurdles, and enhance the reliability of the Nigeria ID System.
In a press statement issued by the Head of the Corporate Communications Unit, Kayode Adegoke, it was explained that the NIMC Bill is a significant legislative endeavor to improve the efficacy and inclusivity of the Identity Management System.
The bill includes several proposed amendments aimed at enhancing the effectiveness and inclusivity of the Nigeria ID System.
These amendments will strengthen the foundational framework and operations of the NIMC by expanding the scope of registrable persons.
The advantages for the country include having a more comprehensive and inclusive identification system, which enhances national security, facilitates efficient service delivery, and promotes financial inclusion.
The bill also aims to streamline the sharing of personal data and incorporate robust data protection measures to safeguard the privacy and confidentiality of individuals’ personal data, fostering trust among citizens in the handling of their information.
Furthermore, it enhances NIMC’s administrative enforcement power to ensure timely and accurate compliance with ID registration requirements.
