Counsel, Barrister Kunle Sobaloju (SAN), representing the kingmakers in Oyo town (Oyomesi), has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to halt any plans of initiating a fresh process to fill the vacant stool of the Alaafin of Oyo.
In a letter addressed to Governor Makinde on Thursday, Sobaloju emphasized that proceeding with the selection process would undermine the decisions of the Court of Appeal.
Sobaloju reiterated that due to ongoing appeals and applications for injunctions, it would be inappropriate for Governor Makinde to take any actions that may invalidate the Court of Appeal’s rulings.
He further cautioned that commencing a new selection process for the Alaafin of Oyo would be unlawful and disregard the authority of the superior courts.
Sobaloju referred to previous judgments by the Supreme Court, which criticized self-help actions by parties involved in legal disputes, highlighting the case of Ajuwon & Ors v. Governor of Oyo State & Ors. (2021) LPELR-55339(SC), where the Supreme Court denounced undemocratic behavior by democratically elected governors.
The letter concluded by urging Governor Makinde to uphold the law, respect the integrity of the courts, and refrain from initiating a fresh process for the vacant stool of the Alaafin of Oyo until the pending motion for injunction is resolved.
