Chase Briscoe secured his spot in the NASCAR playoff field by claiming victory at the Cook Out Southern 500 held at Darlington Raceway on September 1st.
This win marked Briscoe’s first Cup victory since his triumph at Phoenix Raceway in March 2022. It was imperative for Briscoe to secure the win in order to secure his place among the 16 drivers in the NASCAR playoffs.
Kyle Busch, the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion and the 2015 and 2019 Cup Series champion, also aimed for victory at Darlington to challenge Briscoe. However, Briscoe skillfully maneuvered his way to the lead, finishing strong and ultimately raising the checkered flag.
In addition to Briscoe, Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Ty Gibbs and Martin Truex Jr. also secured their spots in the playoffs on the final day. Truex, 44, has announced his retirement from NASCAR after this season, ending an accomplished 18-year career that includes 34 victories in the Cup Series.
Despite their efforts, Chris Buescher, Bubba Wallace, and Ross Chastain fell short of victory at Darlington and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Tyler Reddick emerged as the champion in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season, capturing his first-ever title.
Reddick, a driver for No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota, achieved victories at Talladega Superspeedway and Michigan International Speedway this season. With 11 top-five finishes and 18 top-10 finishes, he proved himself as a consistent contender throughout the regular season.
It is worth noting that on August 24th, Burton secured his playoff qualification by triumphing in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona. Despite not being among the top 20 in points before the race, Burton’s win granted him the opportunity to contend for the championship. The playoffs will commence on September 8th at the Quaker State 400 held at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The playoff format consists of three rounds of 16 drivers, with the field narrowing down to 12 for subsequent rounds.
