A sense of purpose has been found to have a significant impact on one’s overall health and well-being. Research has shown that individuals with a strong sense of purpose tend to have a reduced risk of mortality and chronic diseases. In fact, they exhibit better physical health, improved mood, and engage in various positive behaviors.
According to Christine Frey, a certified health coach and counselor, having a sense of purpose means finding something that brings personal meaning and fulfillment to life. It goes beyond the daily routine and motivates individuals to get out of bed every morning.
Dr. Sulagna Misra, an expert in internal, integrative, and aesthetic medicine, emphasizes that having a sense of purpose increases an individual’s appreciation for life. This stems from a strong desire to fulfill that purpose and leads to various positive outcomes. People with a sense of purpose tend to engage in regular exercise, maintain positive relationships, and have a generally optimistic outlook. Consequently, they exhibit lower rates of depression, anxiety, cardiovascular diseases, and hypertension.
On the other hand, individuals lacking a sense of purpose may face medical issues such as depression and anxiety. They also experience social challenges like feelings of isolation and shame, and struggle to connect with others or find joy in the present moment.
Frey emphasizes that having a sense of purpose can lead to personal fulfillment and contentment. This, in turn, triggers the release of chemicals like serotonin and endorphins, which positively impact our overall health and well-being.
One can find purpose in multiple roles such as being a mother or a woman, while also seeking additional purpose through education, charity work, or running a business. Purpose can also evolve as life circumstances change and as we age.
Exploring different activities and surrounding ourselves with diverse people can help us discover our purpose, says Frey.
Misra suggests that volunteering, pursuing further education, or connecting with inspiring individuals can be particularly beneficial in finding and cultivating a sense of purpose.
It is important to note that purpose does not necessarily need to involve grand gestures like saving a species or influencing government policies. Everyday activities that bring us joy and fulfillment can also carry a sense of purpose.
