Abuja – The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, announced today that the percentage of Nigerians with access to over 20% of electricity has reached 40%, meaning that more than 80 million Nigerians now have a reliable power supply. The minister credited this achievement to several groundbreaking measures implemented with the support of President Bola Tinubu, which have resulted in more stable and consistent electricity supply throughout the country.
Reviewing the ministry’s activities over the past year, Adelabu highlighted that over 40% of Nigeria’s electrified consumers now have access to over 20 hours of regular and stable electricity nationwide. These positive results were achieved through radical and bold steps taken by the government, as Adelabu explained. President Tinubu has consistently emphasized the importance of a stable and consistent power supply for Nigeria’s economic growth and industrialization.
One of the significant achievements of the Ministry of Power in the past year is the generation of over 5,500 megawatts of power, Adelabu revealed. The ministry aims to further improve on this record by the end of the year. The minister emphasized that stable electricity is crucial for any nation’s development and should be a priority. He mentioned the examples of Korea, China, Europe, and North America as countries that have achieved industrialization and economic growth due, in large part, to their stable electricity supply.
Adelabu stated that Nigeria’s vision is to ensure stable electricity supply for households, businesses, institutions, and industries, enabling them to enhance their activities, capacities, and job creation. He highlighted the support provided by the government to industrial giants like Samsung, Hyundai, and LG in countries such as South Korea, whose success has been driven by reliable electricity for their operations. Adelabu concluded that achieving widespread electrification and providing stable electricity to industries will lead to increased production and employment opportunities for the Nigerian population.
The Ministry of Power’s mandate is to promote national development through the formulation of appropriate policies, establishment of structures and institutions, and ensuring stable electricity supply to households, businesses, institutions, and industries. Adelabu highlighted the ministry’s efforts to improve Nigeria’s power generation capacity, which has increased to over 14,000 megawatts with the addition of the newly commissioned Zungeru hydroelectric power plant and enhanced capacity of existing power plants.
Currently, Nigeria generates over 5,500 megawatts of power, transmitting and distributing it to customers. Furthermore, more than 40% of customers now enjoy over 20 hours of regular power supply across the country.
