Two professional golfers who have been without a victory for several years are in prime positions to end their personal droughts on the prestigious PGA Tour.
Amidst intense competition, Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas showcased exceptional skills by birdying six of the final eight holes to attain a remarkable 8-under-par 63, catapulting himself into the lead after three rounds of the highly anticipated 3M Open at Blaine, Minnesota on Saturday.
When asked about his performance, Vegas expressed confidence, stating, “My game is starting to feel good. The level of play I know I can achieve is gradually coming back.”
Meanwhile, Matt Kuchar managed to secure a temporary share of the first-place position with an impressive eagle on the 18th hole, granting him a solid 63 and a spot in contention for the prestigious victory. However, Vegas, who currently stands at 16-under 197, retaliated by birdying the final hole, thus regaining the sole lead.
Vegas, who has remained victorious on the PGA Tour for an astounding seven years, demonstrated resilience and resolve by strategically obtaining three birdies within a four-hole stretch, propelling him into a share of the top spot after the 14th hole, and fortifying his position until the end.
Reflecting on his journey, Vegas remarked, “It has been a challenging road since my last win. I have encountered numerous obstacles, including injuries. To reignite the spirit of victory, one must delve deep into their personal well of memories and determination.”
Kuchar, who also hasn’t clinched a victory in over five years and seeks to secure his 10th career win on the tour, will fiercely contend in the final round at the esteemed TPC Twin Cities, trailing Vegas by a mere one shot at 15-under 198.
Reflecting on the ups and downs of his journey, Kuchar confessed, “It has been a challenging and frustrating year. Nevertheless, golf becomes enjoyable when one finds themselves in contention on Sundays. I am eagerly looking forward to having a positive and exhilarating experience on the course.”
Notably, Kuchar’s remarkable performance on the par-3 17th nearly resulted in an ace before his final-hole eagle, achieved through a skillful chip in front of the green. The ball subsequently bounced multiple times before miraculously clanking against the pin and dropping into the cup. These impressive shots transpired following a series of extraordinary long putts by the former Georgia Tech golfer.
Expressing his relief, Kuchar stated, “Thankfully, I witnessed the putts aligning with the intended trajectory and find their way into the hole.”
Maverick McNealy also showcased an exceptional performance by achieving his lowest round of the year, a noteworthy 63 that propelled him to 14-under. Additionally, Patrick Fishburn and Sahith Theegala share the fourth-place position at an impressive 12-under, with Fishburn securing a remarkable 63 and Theegala attaining a solid 66.
When asked about his spectacular performance, McNealy attributed his success to the unique compatibility between his skills and the golf course, stating, “For some reason, this particular golf course has consistently been a bastion of success for me.”
Meanwhile, Canada’s Adam Svensson, Matt NeSmith, and Australia’s Cam Davis remain closely tied for the sixth-place position at an impressive 11-under. Among Svensson’s highlights was a remarkable birdie obtained from a sand trap on the par-3 eighth.
If Davis emerges victorious, he will join an illustrious group of individuals who have secured multiple wins on the tour this year. Expressing his self-assuredness, Davis confidently stated, “I currently find myself in a positive mental and physical position. All aspects of my game are aligning seamlessly, and I remain committed to consistently performing at my best.”
Regrettably, Canadian Taylor Pendrith, who previously held a two-stroke lead after the second round, encountered a sudden downturn with a 2-over 73. Pendrith endured a five-hole stretch, resulting in a disappointing double-bogey 6 at the 11th hole. Nonetheless, he managed to finish the last seven holes with a score of 1 under, leaving him tied for the ninth-place position at an admirable 10-under.
Among the early finishers, Fishburn managed to emerge as the frontrunner on the leaderboard before being caught up by other talented players.
Although Gary Woodland delivered a remarkable eagle by holing out from the fairway on the par-4 10th hole, he encountered challenges throughout the tournament, culminating in a score of 74 and a cumulative score of 4-under.
Notably, the tournament implemented a threesomes format on Saturday to enhance the competitive atmosphere.
Unfortunately, Lee Hodges, the 2023 tournament champion, failed to make the cut with a cumulative score of 7-over through two rounds.
