Team USA clinched the gold medal in the women’s team final for gymnastics at the 2024 Olympic Games held in Paris. The team put on a dominant performance throughout the competition, securing its lead and emerging victorious.
The artistic gymnastics team from the United States soared to the top of the podium with an impressive score of 171.296, achieving a remarkable 6-point lead over the second-place team.
Team USA had set their sights on claiming the first-place position, aiming to add to their back-to-back gold medals achieved at the Summer Olympics in London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016. They considered the Olympic Games in Paris as their redemption tour following their silver medal at the Tokyo Games.
Simone Biles, the renowned American gymnast, solidified her status as the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history, now possessing a staggering total of eight medals. To close out the competition, she received a standing ovation from the exhilarated crowd, achieving a score of 14.666 on the floor exercise.
Biles, 27, exhibited her exceptional talent with an outstanding score of 14.9 on the vault, visibly elated as she flashed a radiant smile upon landing flawlessly. Despite tweaking her calf during warm-ups for the floor exercise on July 28, the eight-time Olympic medalist competed with tape on her leg during the July 30 events. Her beam score of 14.366 demonstrated one of the highest marks of the night.
Biles, alongside her teammate Jordan Chiles, displayed their remarkable skills across all four events in the prestigious Bercy Arena in Paris.
Suni Lee, 21, showcased her abilities on the uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. Although she received a deduction for her feet touching the floor during the uneven bars routine, her remarkable level of difficulty contributed to a commendable score of 14.566. She later scored 13.533 on the floor.
Jade Carey, 24, participated solely in the vault event, where she earned an impressive score of 14.800. Carey revealed that an illness played a role in her fall during the qualifying floor routine.
Chiles, 23, captivated the audience with her floor routine, amassing a score of 13.966. Overwhelmed with emotion, the talented gymnast was on the brink of tears as she concluded her performance. Chiles, known as the dynamic duo’s partner, trained alongside her best friend and teammate, Biles.
Rival teams of Team USA encountered mishaps and errors throughout the competition, including falls on the balance beam from Brazil and China.
Entering the finals with a comfortable 5-point lead over second-place Italy, the United States reaffirmed their status as the favorites. Three gymnasts from each country competed on each apparatus.
An array of American celebrities, including Natalie Portman, Serena Williams, Michael Phelps, Nicole Kidman, and Spike Lee, graced the crowd as they passionately cheered on Team USA during the women’s gymnastics team final.
Italy secured the silver medal with a commendable score of 165.494 points, while Brazil claimed the bronze medal with a score of 164.497.
