The Los Angeles Olympics for 2028 announced on Friday additional venue assignments, with the cities of Carson and Long Beach reclaiming their roles from previous games held in the region.
Carson has been chosen to host track cycling at the velodrome, field hockey in the adjacent fields, rugby sevens in the stadium, and tennis at Dignity Health Sports Park. However, the 2028 Games will not be using the existing corporate names for stadiums and arenas.
The city’s velodrome previously served as the venue for track cycling during the 1984 LA Olympics.
Long Beach will serve as the location for rowing and canoe sprint at its Marine Stadium, handball at Long Beach Arena, marathon swimming and triathlon along the city’s waterfront, sailing at Belmont Shore, and water polo in a temporary pool in the convention center parking lot. Additionally, artistic swimming, which was announced earlier, will also take place there.
Rowing and canoe sprint have been relocated from Lake Perris in Riverside County, which is approximately 1.5 hours from Long Beach. Long Beach previously hosted archery, fencing, sailing, and volleyball during the 1984 Games. Marine Stadium also hosted rowing during the 1932 Games.
In addition to the previously announced athletics, gymnastics, and diving, the Figueroa Street corridor south of downtown Los Angeles will now host seven more sports.
The Los Angeles Convention Center, which served as the main press center in 1984, will now host fencing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, and wrestling. Weightlifting will take place at a theater across the street.
Golf will be played at the Riviera Country Club in the Pacific Palisades section of Los Angeles. Badminton will be held at Galen Center on the University of Southern California campus.
Janet Evans, LA28’s chief athlete officer and a four-time gold medalist, expressed pride in bringing the Games to their vibrant and diverse communities. She mentioned that the City of Los Angeles will host more Olympic sports than any other city, with Carson and Long Beach hosting more competitions than ever before.
In the previous bid plan of 2017, the Los Angeles organizing committee proposed several venue assignments that moved competitions outside of city boundaries. However, the changes announced on Friday do not involve moving events outside city boundaries. The proposal is currently under review by the city council, but the International Olympic Committee has already approved the changes.
There are still venue assignments to be announced for new sports that were added since the city’s original bid plan in 2017.
The Los Angeles Olympics for 2028 will take place from July 14 to 30, marking the city’s third time hosting the Games.
