The San Francisco Giants continued their winning streak as they beat the Washington Nationals 4-1 on Monday night. This victory marks their eighth win in their last ten games and brings them to a .500 win percentage for the first time since June 1st.
San Francisco’s rising star, Tyler Fitzgerald, once again showcased his impressive skills with two hits and a home run. This remarkable achievement follows his recognition as the National League’s rookie of the month for July. Fitzgerald has now hit 10 home runs in the past 17 games, bringing his total for the season to 11.
Logan Webb, the Giants’ pitcher, delivered another stellar performance by allowing only one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. Webb, who recently pitched a five-hit shutout against the Oakland A’s, demonstrated his consistency and control on the mound. Manager Bob Melvin praised Webb’s effective pitching on a hot night, noting that his 95 pitches were perfectly executed.
Closing out the game, Camilo Doval stepped up with a remarkable display and secured his 21st save by striking out the side in the ninth inning.
On the opposing side, Washington’s starter, Patrick Corbin, was aiming for his 100th career win but struggled against the Giants’ offense. Corbin allowed four runs on seven hits during his six innings on the mound. Despite conceding the opening home run to Fitzgerald, Corbin acknowledged the need to maintain focus and attack the opposing batters.
Matt Chapman, one of the key contributors for the Giants, once again demonstrated his power at the plate. In the third inning, Chapman hit a home run after Corbin walked Michael Conforto, extending the Giants’ lead to 4-0. Chapman’s exceptional performance has contributed significantly to the Giants’ recent success. In his last 12 games, he has maintained an impressive batting average of .378 with four doubles, five home runs, and 11 RBIs.
Webb’s shutout bid was eventually broken in the sixth inning when Keibert Ruiz drew a 13-pitch walk and subsequently scored on James Wood’s RBI single. Webb’s frustration was evident as he reflected on the prolonged at-bat against Ruiz, stating that it was annoying to witness him fouling off several pitches.
