The total number of registrations, renewals, and restorations for Nigeria’s .ng domain name reached a total of 226,454 in July 2024, showing a slight decline compared to the previous months of May and June, which recorded 223,891 and 226,702 registrations respectively. These statistics were released by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), the organization responsible for managing Nigeria’s country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD).
According to the latest statistics, the .ng domain name registrations, renewals, and restorations showed a steady growth trend. The numbers reached 223,891 in May 2024, increased to 226,702 in June 2024, and slightly dropped to 226,454 in July 2024.
Last month, THISDAY reported on the consistent growth of Nigeria’s .ng domain name, starting from 212,890 in December 2023 and reaching 226,702 in June 2024. The growth continued with 217,527 registrations in February, 220,216 in March, and 223,891 in April and May 2024.
The total number of .ng domain name registrations in May 2024 was 8,066, which increased to 8,164 in June and further rose to 8,607 in July. On the other hand, domain name renewals in May were 5,545, reduced to 5,028 in June, and increased again to 5,743 in July. The restoration of .ng domain names showed an increase from 140 in May to 142 in June, and further to 209 in July.
The .ng domain name is Nigeria’s online identity, with the suffix .ng representing the country in cyberspace. Official email addresses originating from Nigeria end with .ng, similar to .co.uk in the United Kingdom, .com in the United States, and .co.za in South Africa.
Nigeria has received commendations from the global Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for the growth and adoption of .ng domain names across various sectors. However, there was a slight decline in July, with 226,454 registrations.
President of NiRA, Mr. Adesola Akinsanya, expressed confidence in the strategies implemented to ensure the continuous growth of .ng domain names in Nigeria. NiRA has collaborated with government agencies to drive growth and adoption of the .ng domain name, recognizing its importance in advancing the country’s digital ecosystem.
Recently, Nigeria participated in the Coalition for Digital Africa DNSSEC Roadshow, organized in collaboration with ICANN and NiRA. The roadshow aimed to deploy Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) and enhance internet security for the .ng domain.
