The Nigerian aviation industry has announced its plans to embark on a nationwide protest on August 21, 2024. This is in response to the Federal Government’s decision to deduct 50 percent from the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of key aviation agencies.
In a letter titled “Save Aviation From Collapse,” the unions representing the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), and Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) have announced the protest.
The letter, dated Tuesday, August 14, 2024, states: “All workers of the mentioned agencies, joined by the solidarity of all aviation workers, are hereby directed to embark on peaceful protests at all airports nationwide to demand the discontinuation of these deductions.”

The unions argue that these agencies, which are cost-recovery organizations rather than profit-making entities, cannot sustain operations with only half of their revenue. They also warn that critical safety functions are being compromised due to the financial strain. The unions emphasize that they will not be responsible for any potential dysfunction in the aviation industry resulting from these financial constraints.
All state councils, women’s commissions, youth councils, and union branches have been instructed to mobilize for the protest to ensure broad participation.
