Mr. Obidike Uzu, the Managing Director of Global Process and Pipeline Services Limited and Vice Chairman of Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), has shared his extensive 28 years of experience in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. In an interview, he offered solutions to the challenges currently facing the sector. This exclusive interview was conducted by Ejiofor Alike. Here are the key excerpts:
When asked about his landmark achievements as he marks his 60th birthday, Mr. Uzu expressed pride in his unblemished 28-year career in the oil industry. He highlighted the establishment of Global Process and Pipeline Services Limited (GPPSL) as one of his major achievements. This world-class certified company has received commendation from various entities including the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIPS), and International Oil Companies (IOCs). The strategic business structure and successful partnership of GPPSL contribute to its continuous growth.
Mr. Uzu shared the insights that led to the birth of his company. After working for Shell and BJ services for several years, he decided to establish GPPSL due to personal experiences and the need for a reliable oil-servicing company in Nigeria. Within the 14 years of operation, GPPSL has earned recognition and won multiple national and international awards.
The impact of GPPSL on Nigeria’s economy has been commendable. As one of the few indigenous oil-servicing companies, GPPSL has played a crucial role in supporting the nation’s oil production. In particular, the company stepped in to fill the gap left by major international service companies that exited the country four years ago. GPPSL now supports the maintenance of major assets for International Oil Companies (IOCs) and contributes to approximately 60% of all oil production in Nigeria. The company’s contribution extends to the country’s refinery as well. Although GPPSL operates silently, its role in oil and gas production in Nigeria cannot be underestimated. The company aims to continue supporting the industry and prevent the need for looking outside the country for such services.
In the context of the global energy transition and Nigeria’s quest for energy justice, Mr. Uzu advised African leaders to allocate more resources to oil and gas infrastructure to increase production. He emphasized the importance of building up reserves to fund other sectors like agriculture and infrastructure. Mr. Uzu urged the government to foster investor confidence by putting flexible policies in place that encourage more investment in the oil sector. He argued that Nigeria should exploit its oil resources today while they still hold value.
When discussing solutions to ramp up oil production, Mr. Uzu highlighted the need for increased investment in developing new fields and drilling more wells. He also stressed the importance of providing incentives for investors and resolving the challenges in the Niger Delta region to create a favorable operating environment. By reducing security costs and achieving lower production costs, Nigeria can enhance profitability in the industry.
As the Vice Chairman of PETAN, Mr. Uzu explained the association’s impact on the oil and gas industry. PETAN offers end-to-end services in the sector and has benefited from the support of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board. The association’s aim is to improve service quality to meet global standards and ensure client satisfaction. Mr. Uzu emphasized the importance of aligning expectations between buyers and service providers, as well as disciplining members who fail to meet the new standards.
In terms of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Mr. Uzu has been providing bursaries to students for the past 13 years, benefiting over 1,105 individuals. He emphasized the significance of giving back and expressed his plans to continue giving to society in the future. Mr. Uzu recounted various projects he has undertaken, including rebuilding an Anglican Church and aiding in the reconstruction of a local market. He believes in the power of giving and aims to inspire others to embrace a spirit of generosity.
Recently, Mr. Uzu launched a book that narrates his inspiring story of grace, glory, and overcoming challenges. The motivational book highlights the importance of faith, values, and destiny in achieving positive outcomes. Mr. Uzu shared his personal journey and emphasized the significance of maintaining ethical values throughout his career. He believes that his story will inspire others who are facing despairing situations, offering them hope and encouragement.
