SEC Directs Shareholders to Utilize Official Website for E-Dividend Access
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has instructed shareholders to utilize the e-dividend portal available on its official website.
In a recent interview, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, the Director General of the SEC, stressed the safety of the process and urged investors to seize the opportunity to authorize their accounts.
Dr. Agama emphasized that the portal is only genuine when accessed through the SEC website or the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS) website, as the two platforms are closely integrated.
Given the prevalent cybersecurity threats in this domain, it is crucial to be vigilant. Various perpetrators may seek to clone websites, including those of reputable institutions. However, by visiting the fully protected SEC website www.sec.gov.ng, investors can securely access the e-dividend portal.
The requirement of providing a Bank Verification Number (BVN) on the portal is reasonable, as it is currently the most authentic means of retrieving financial information. Dr. Agama explained that this step is necessary to verify one’s identity and ensure the protection of investors and regulatory bodies.
Addressing the issue of unclaimed dividends, Dr. Agama emphasized its significance for investors. He stated that investors enter the market with the expectation of returns, and the failure to receive dividends poses a significant challenge. The SEC is deeply committed to addressing this matter effectively.
