Cdc And Fda Release Advisory For Recalled Eggs Connected To A Widespread Outbreak Across Multiple States.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are issuing warnings regarding eggs that have been recalled in multiple states due to an outbreak of the Salmonella bacteria.

The affected eggs were distributed to retailers and food service locations in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin, according to the FDA notice. Milos Poultry Farms, the supplier, has informed its customers who received the recalled eggs.

However, the CDC has stated that the actual number of individuals affected by the bacterial outbreak is likely higher than the reported cases. The outbreak may extend beyond the currently identified states since it can take several weeks to determine if an individual is part of the outbreak.

Additionally, the CDC highlights that many people infected with Salmonella recover without medical treatment and are never tested.

Through its investigation, the CDC has determined that the 65 individuals who contracted Salmonella from this outbreak ranged in age from 2 to 88 years old, with 56% being female and 46% being male.

State and local public health officials are conducting interviews to identify the foods consumed by the affected individuals in the week before they fell ill. Several of these individuals reported eating at the same restaurants prior to getting sick, according to the CDC notice.

If multiple individuals who were not treated share exposure to a particular location within a few days of each other, it suggests that the contaminated food item was served or sold there, the CDC adds.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has reported that it identified four instances of the illness occurring at restaurants where the recalled eggs were served.

The FDA has advised retailers, restaurants, and consumers not to serve or sell the recalled eggs and to discard any purchased eggs.

However, it is important to note that Salmonella infection can be more severe in certain groups, such as infants, young children, individuals aged 65 and older, those with weakened immune systems, and people taking specific medications that reduce stomach acidity.

In rare cases, Salmonella can lead to serious complications involving the blood, joints, nervous system, brain or spinal fluid, and urinary tract, which may result in hospitalization or even death, according to health officials.
