In a recent statement, former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar criticized President Bola Tinubu’s broadcast to the nation as an inadequate response to the widespread public protests against his administration’s poor governance. Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibeh, highlighted that the speech failed to address the pressing economic hardships facing Nigerian families since the beginning of Tinubu’s tenure.
Atiku expressed disappointment with the lack of credibility in the President’s address and the absence of immediate, concrete solutions for the Nigerian people. He expected Tinubu to announce groundbreaking reforms, especially those aimed at reducing excessive governance costs, given the attention the protests have received and the threats made by government officials against demonstrators.
However, no such announcements were made, and Tinubu disregarded the protesters’ demands, including the suspension of aircraft purchases for the president, downsizing the bloated cabinet, and eliminating the costly office of the First Lady, who has been indulging in extravagant trips at the expense of the nation.
According to Atiku, President Tinubu’s speech only superficially addressed his proposed reforms, revealing a lack of policy understanding and failing to convince the audience. He emphasized that the president’s words lacked substance and respect for the sentiments of the protesters, further eroding faith in his reform agenda.
Atiku called on the President and his team to acknowledge their failures over the past 14 months and abandon the baseless theory that the protests are orchestrated by the opposition. He highlighted the administration’s overall failures and even criticized their inability to keep a presidential speech confidential, resulting in the premature leak.
This leak further undermines the already dwindling confidence of the media and Nigerians in the administration. Atiku stressed that the economic quagmire Nigeria currently finds itself in is not solely the creation of the opposition but rather a product of Tinubu’s trial-and-error policies.
Instead of playing the blame game, Atiku advised the President to confront the reality of his failures and take necessary action.
