Kano, Jigawa, and Yobe have eased the 24-hour curfew imposed in their respective states due to the escalating violence during the #Endbadgovernance protests.
In Kano State, the curfew has been adjusted to be in effect from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., as announced by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Malam Baba Dantiye. The purpose of this adjustment is to restore normalcy in the state.
Following the ongoing nationwide protest, the state government had initially imposed a 24-hour curfew to ensure safety. Governor Abba Yusuf expressed condolences to the families who lost loved ones and property during the violent protest.
The governor has urged residents to return to their homes by 2 p.m. and assured them that the curfew would be reviewed as the security situation improves. He also called for prayers for peace, progress, and political stability in the state and the nation.
In Jigawa State, the government has relaxed the curfew in eight local government areas, as well as in 19 other areas after assessing the security situation. The initial curfew was imposed by Governor Umar Namadi following vandalism and looting of public and private properties during the protest.
The curfew in Babura, Birnin Kudu, Dutse, Gumel, Hadejia, Kazaure, Kiyawa, and Roni has been relaxed from 6:00 pm to 5 am starting from Sunday, August 4, 2024. The State Joint Security Committee has also lifted the curfew in 19 LGAs where there were no reports of violence during the protest.
Governor Namadi commended the residents in these areas for their patriotism, respect for authorities, and cooperation with security agencies during the protest. He urged the residents to continue praying for peace and stability in the country and praised the security agencies for their professionalism, commitment, and dedication.
Similarly, the Yobe State Government has approved a curfew review in Potiskum, Gashua, and Nguru, extending it by five hours. The decision was made due to a significant improvement in the security situation in these towns.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Retired Brig.- Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam, announced that the curfew will now be from noon to 5 p.m., allowing people to engage in lawful activities. The governor commended the efforts of the security agencies in restoring peace and emphasized the need for vigilance to prevent any law and order disruptions during the relaxed curfew hours.
