The Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has refuted claims that he expressed willingness to become a Vice-Presidential candidate in 2027.
In an interview with News Central, Obi discussed his presidential ambition, the state of Nigeria’s economy, and other related topics. He dismissed the notion that he is desperate to be president and emphasized his openness to collaborating with other candidates as long as their intentions are focused on improving the lives of Nigerians.
However, Obi took to his verified X handle on Saturday to clarify that some parts of his interview were deliberately distorted by certain individuals. He restated his commitment to working with other candidates who share his vision for Nigeria’s progress, but cautioned against aligning with those whose aim is to capture the state. Obi reiterated that he is not driven by a personal quest for power, but rather by a genuine desire to see Nigeria thrive.
He also emphasized his loyalty to the Labour Party and stated that any negotiation or partnership must be rooted in transparency and the shared objective of advancing the nation’s interests. Obi made it clear that his focus lies in addressing the pressing challenges facing Nigeria, such as hunger, poverty, and insecurity, and ensuring that every child has access to education and healthcare.
Obi concluded by expressing his surprise and disappointment at the misinterpretation of his words, underscoring the unequivocal nature of his statement. He affirmed his unwavering commitment to Nigeria and reiterated his belief that he can contribute to the nation’s progress without holding any official position. When the time comes, if he decides to run for office, it will be with the aim of serving the people and implementing policies that uplift the nation.
