Lawmakers Withdraw Controversial Counter Subversion Bill Following Public Outcry
In response to public backlash, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has ordered the withdrawal of the proposed Counter Subversion Bill. The bill, which aimed to criminalize subversive activities by associations, organizations, and other proscribed groups, had sparked criticism for its harsh punishments on offenders.
Under the proposed bill, individuals and organizations found guilty of subversive activities would face penalties ranging from two to five years imprisonment or a fine ranging from N2 million to N15 million.
The bill sought to establish a legal and institutional framework for the detection, prevention, investigation, prosecution, and punishment of subversive and related activities in the country. It also aimed to regulate the procedure and execution of the provisions outlined in the act.
Following widespread opposition and concerns raised by the public, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas issued a statement through his special adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Musa Abdullahi Krishi, announcing the withdrawal of the bill.
In a move to address the voices and concerns of the people, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Ph.D., has decided to withdraw the Counter Subversion Bill and other related draft legislation. This decision comes after extensive consultations with various stakeholders and a careful consideration of the current circumstances in the nation.
The introduction of the Counter-Subversion Bill by the House of Representatives drew sharp criticism from Omoyele Sowore, the Convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement. Sowore, a former presidential candidate, described the bill as buffoonery and warned that it could lead to a resurgence of the #EndBadGovernance movement sooner than expected.
In a post on his social media account, Sowore stated, “The buffoonery of this House of Twerps is the reason why #FearlessInOctober #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria revolt might resume earlier than usual.”
