Suspect Arrested By Police After Gunmen Fatally Shoot Farmer In Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command announced yesterday that they have apprehended an individual in connection with the alleged murder of a farmer named Joshua Gbadamosi in Ifira Akoko, Akoko South-East Local Government Area of the state.

The unfortunate incident took place on Tuesday, just five days after another farmer, Sunday Ayeni, was reportedly killed on his farm by armed men suspected to be herdsmen.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident and stated that the 15-year-old suspect is currently in custody while the investigation is underway.

“Yes, the incident did occur, and we have arrested one Adamu Farouk, aged 15. The investigation is ongoing,” she said.

Reports indicate that the lifeless body of Gbadamosi was discovered on his farm at Ogudu Farm Settlement in the council area, with visible machete cuts on various parts of his body.

According to a source from the community, Gbadamosi’s body was later recovered by the police at Isua Akoko and transferred to the morgue at Ipe Akoko General Hospital.

In response to the incident, the monarch of Ogbagi Akoko, Oba Victor Adetona, who also serves as the chairman of the Akoko Divisional Council of Obas, expressed his outrage, describing the killing as callous, wicked, and unacceptable.

He lamented that the uncontrolled activities of the herdsmen are forcing farmers to abandon their farms. The monarch called on the government and security agencies to intensify their efforts in restoring peace and security in Akoko. He warned that the continued neglect of the situation could have dire consequences not only for the community but also beyond.
