Female basketball player Angel Reese recently shared the news of her unfortunate season-ending injury. She has suffered a small crack in a bone in her wrist, which necessitates surgery scheduled for Tuesday.
In a TikTok video posted late Sunday night, Reese explained how the injury occurred. It happened when she fell on her hand during a play and experienced a small crack in her bone. After consulting with doctors, Reese decided to undergo surgery. The alternative was not getting surgery, but this carried the risk of developing arthritis at the young age of 22. Furthermore, the bone could have shattered completely if left untreated. Therefore, Reese made the wise choice to undergo surgery, during which a small screw will be inserted to aid in the healing process.
Reese elaborated on her recovery process, sharing that she will be in a hard cast for four weeks, followed by a soft cast for two. Healing this type of injury is challenging due to the limited blood flow in the affected area, making it uncertain whether she could have returned to playing basketball in the long run.
Prior to her injury, Angel Reese had a remarkable season, averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds. Her rebound average is the highest in the history of the WNBA, and she also set a rookie record with 26 double-doubles. Her most recent double-double occurred in a 92-78 victory over Los Angeles on Friday night.
Angel Reese and Indiana rookie Caitlin Clark have a history together since their matchup in the NCAA championship game two years ago, which Reese’s LSU team won. Both players have contributed significantly to the success of the WNBA this season, boosting television ratings, attendance, and merchandise sales.
Caitlin Clark expressed her sympathy for Reese, stating how devastating it is to witness a player with such talent and work ethic sustain an injury. Clark recognized Reese’s exceptional motor and expressed admiration for her accomplishments throughout her career.
Despite the setback, Reese plans to stay active during her recovery period. She intends to continue training, engaging in off-court activities, and supporting her teammates from the sidelines. Reese also clarified that rumors of her pregnancy are false, emphasizing that she is currently focused on her basketball career and not planning to have children anytime soon.
In the WNBA standings, the Chicago Sky currently hold the final playoff position, one game ahead of the Atlanta Dream. The Sky’s next game is against the Washington Mystics on Wednesday.
